Help?

So Miss Mira will be 7 months on May 13.  She’ll gnaw on crusts and veggies and fruits, but she is generally uninterested in actually eating. We tried banana puree and rice cereal (Her eyes filled with scorn as she spit, sputtered and gagged!). I’ve also attempted introducing a bottle and sippy cup. She was unimpressed with both.  Frankly, I’m exhausted and I’m not sure how to dazzle her with feeding options outside myself. I never had this problem with Ophelia. After we introduced the bottle at 2 weeks (Ben and I went out for Valentines day!) she was hooked and never looked back.  I need suggestions for weaning or at the very least, getting her to take a bottle.

Jubilee wasn’t really interested in food till she was a year old. Different babies seem to get into food at different times.

Don’t tell me that!! I’m SO ready for her to make the switch! Ben and I tried to go on a date without the kids and Mira screamed bloody murder the whole 45 minutes we were gone! I felt awful for our sweet friend who offered to babysit.

Hi! Are you wanting to wean her or just got her into more solids? Whichever you’re after, there are lots of great ways to approach it. In our case, L wasn’t obsessed with baby food when we introduced it (around 6 months) but we just kept offering her a bit after her breakfast, lunch, and dinner nursing sessions (not after her first-thing-in-the-morning or just-before-bed feedings, because those were going to be dropped when she was ready). After a few months of this regular offering business she seemed to get the hang of the fact that meals consisted of nursing and then some food. When we were ready to wean (for our family this was about one year old) it was not hard to just drop the nursing part of the meal. Anyhow, all this in the hopes that it will encourage you to carry on brilliantly as you are! It took L at least a few months to get the hang of it, but eventually she was happy with the arrangement (as we were!). I know real life can be more complicated than this paragraph appears, but that’s what we did that seemed to help L onto the path of regular food. Of course, it is only what worked best for us, and may not suit your situation at all! Every family ought to approach such things with a good fit for their household, so feel free to toss my thoughts if needed. 🙂

I’m sorry Mira screamed while you were out! L was unpredictable that way, too, at least for awhile. It can be so stressful. Do you remember when we went to Northpark when you came to help after L was born and she just screamed the whole time, no matter what I did?! Augh. I feel ya!

L wasn’t that bad at Northpark. She was just a bit fussy and it was no problem. You handled it brilliantly. Aren’t you glad we are past all that new mommy stuff? It’s nice to have learned how to juggle babies and outings (more or less), now!

Thanks for the advice. It’s good to know this won’t last forever. Mostly we just want to get Mira off the breasts. I don’t mind if I need to pump for awhile, but we just want her to learn to eat independently of me. If she’ll go for solids, that would be easiest, but so far, she has been pretty unimpressed with what the world has to offer. 🙂
