First Time Mom Question

So Ophelia (age 2) is still sleeping in this crib. She hasn’t figured out how to get out yet (she’s petite, it makes it a bit trickier). Her bedroom is toddler-safe. Should I convert her crib into her toddler bed (it comes with rails to keep her from rolling out)  now or wait until we can’t use the crib anymore? I understand it will be more work putting her down for naps when she is able to get up and play, but aside from that, what are the pros and cons?

I cannot speak from experience, but I can tell you what I’ve read. I haven’t heard any pros or cons to switching to toddler beds at any particular time in the kiddo’s development, except that it makes it easier to potty train when they can get out of bed and let you know that they have to go. The other thing is being careful if you’re doing it around the time the next baby is coming into the picture – apparently the kidlets can see a connection between new baby coming and their sleeping situation changed and things can get a little bitter in the mind of a two year old. But that’s only what I’ve read. Maybe she’d think that switching to a ‘big girl’ bed would be cool when the baby comes? Who knows. I guess you’ll just have to try it and see! Oh, and kudos on having her room toddler proof. B’s room is the storage room, and probably the least toddler proof room in the house. We really need to fix that!

Thanks. Those are good points. I think we are thinking we’ll switch her over this summer when Ben is off school and can help with the transition. We tried potty training and she’s just not interested right now. I do plan on getting her out of diapers before the newbie arrives, though. On storage: well, toddler proofing her room meant turning our living room and master bed into storage. Apartment, living, eh?

I hear ya. We’re considering moving from our 5×10 storage unit to a 10×10. B is also uninterested in the potty right now – actually, she’s scared to death of it so we’re taking a month or so off. She is very excited about the princess panties though, so that’ll be a good motivator when we come back around to it!

O is scared, too! She likes the her potty, and sets her babies on it (or in it) all the time, but when I am lucky enough to sit her on it when she actually needs to use it, she becomes hysterical, “Nooooo, Mommy!! Nooooo!!” Of course, she still apologizes for pooing, too.

Well I have a two year old myself and we switched her out of her crib in November because she was rattling the cage of it too much. I think it all depends on Ophelia. Sophia took to her toddler bed immediately and loves it. I have no problems with her in it and she naps like a champ! 🙂 We made it a point to give her room a little (cost effective) make over too so that it was more toddler friendly. Hope that helps!
