late christmas present

I mentioned that I had to finish my works in progress before starting on anything new. Well, I’ve gotten so many ideas for fun new projects that I just sat myself down last week and finished up all of the half-finished projects I had lying around (lying? laying? I could never get that one!). This is one of the recently finished projects, and it was actually supposed to be one of B’s Christmas presents, but she doesn’t seem to mind receiving gifts in January! I wanted to start a dress-up wardrobe for her, but I wanted to avoid the chintzy Wal-Mart Snow White and Cinderella costumes (for multiple reasons). So, I made her this regal cape that turned out to be quite queenly. I used the left-over purple velvet from my duvet cover and bought some gold satin brocade-ish stuff for the trim. It is almost a whole circle, but I clipped it in at the shoulders a bit so that it would fit more squarely. It has a satiny purple lining and purple corded trim around the neck. I’m going to get some elastic to attach around those buttons, so the safety pin is just a quick fix for now. If the buttons look crooked to you, it’s the angle of the camera. Honest.

And here is the Queen B on her noble steed.
Oh, I almost forgot. My husband was quite dismayed when I started working on this project. Why you ask? Well, if you’ll notice, the colors are Husky colors. Husky colors. In our house of all places. Shhh – don’t tell the family.

Lovely! Jubilee’s first birthday is in March, and I have a vague desire to sew her some toys instead of buying cheap Walmart things. This isn’t easy, as my repertoire of completed projects can be counted on one hand, I’m a very amateur seamstress, but a one year old wouldn’t complain about crooked stitching.
